Matthew Crabbe

Matthew Crabbe (1908 – (1961-02-22)22 February 1961) was a resident of Fort William, the husband of Marie Josephine Crabbe (née Vander Kaa) and a son-in-law of the machinist Paul Vander Kaa.

Life

Matthew Crabbe was born in 1908. On 23 November 1931 he married Marie Josephine Vander Kaa (1907–1987), a daughter of Paul Vander Kaa (1866–1943) and Mary Amelia Vander Kaa (née Beyer, 1874–1961); the marriage was announced in the Fort William Daily Times-Journal the following day.

Family

Matthew and Marie Josephine Crabbe had several children, including:

• Mary Pauline Crabbe (1932–2011), known as Pauline, a registered nurse and St. John Ambulance volunteer who married Clifford Freamo.
• Constance "Connie" Helen Crabbe (1938–2021), a Fort William businesswoman who married Gary Sambray Sr.
• Maxine Martha Crabbe (1937–2020), born on 27 February 1937, who married Leonard Gilbert Otway in 1957.
• Edith Mae "Edie" Crabbe (1933/1934–2022), who married Ted Jenkins.

The Fort William Daily Times-Journal recorded the birth of a daughter to Matthew and Marie Josephine on 27 February 1937; this was Maxine.

Death

Crabbe died on 22 February 1961. He is buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Thunder Bay, where his wife Marie Josephine, who survived him until 1987, was later interred alongside him.

Notes

The same Fort William Daily Times-Journal index records a daughter born on 17 September 1936 to a Mary (née Crabbe) and her husband, recorded as "T. Bernard". As this Mary was a Crabbe by birth rather than by marriage, she may have been a sister or other relative of Matthew Crabbe, though no record confirming any connection has been found.
