Mary Pauline Freamo
Mary Pauline Freamo (née Crabbe; 27 May 1932 – 25 December 2011 (aged 79)), known as Pauline, was a registered nurse and long-serving St. John Ambulance volunteer in Thunder Bay.
Early life and family
Mary Pauline Crabbe was born on 27 May 1932 in Fort William, a daughter of Matthew Crabbe (1908–1961) and Marie Josephine Crabbe (née Vander Kaa, 1907–1987), and a granddaughter of the Fort William machinist Paul Vander Kaa.[1][2] Her sisters were Constance "Connie" Sambray, Maxine Otway and Edith Jenkins.[2]
Career and community service
Freamo trained as a registered nurse and worked for a couple of years in hospital before raising her family.[2] She was a long-time member of St. John Ambulance, involved from 1944, and of its Ladies Auxiliary, volunteering many hours over her lifetime. She received an award for her lifetime service with St. John Ambulance, recognized by the City of Thunder Bay, and was admitted to the Order of St. John, the insignia being presented to her by Governor-General Roland Michener.[2]
Personal life
On 7 April 1956, Pauline married Clifford "Cliff" Freamo. The couple settled in the Current River area of Thunder Bay, living on Hodder Avenue for over 50 years. They had four children: Fred, Jolynn (Chunick), Bonnie, and Virginia (Merritt), along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.[2] After Cliff's retirement in 1987 the couple travelled, including trips to Arizona and a train journey across western Canada. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, sewing, and the company of her dog, Clinker.[2]
Death
Freamo was predeceased by her husband Clifford on 2 February 2002. She died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Thunder Bay on 25 December 2011, at the age of 79, and was interred at Sunset Memorial Gardens.[2]
