Curriepedia:Data sources to ingest/Notes

From thunderbay.wiki

Details moved here on 2026-11-02 from Curriepedia:Data sources to ingest, which is now a status table only. Text is kept essentially as it was, organised by source. The pre-1900 write-up is on Curriepedia:Data sources to ingest/Pre-1900 plan.

About the old page

This is a project page, not an article. It lists sources of information about people, places and organizations in Thunder Bay, Fort William and Port Arthur that have not yet been fully ingested, so that the wiki can eventually hold a named page for every person who has lived in the area. Last reviewed 28 October 2026.

Progress snapshot, 2 Nov 2026 (historical)

This is the snapshot text as it stood on the old page at about 18:30 Bangkok time on 2 Nov 2026. Its row counts refer to the old tables; the status table on the main page is the current record.

Progress snapshot, 2 Nov 2026 (about 18:30 Bangkok time, Asia/Bangkok). Counts below come from the WikiBots' working files and live category totals read on this date. Where the full size of a source is unknown, the row says so instead of guessing, and any figure called an estimate gives its basis. Of the 95 rows in the Already ingested and Sources still to ingest tables, 19 are done (the 14 ingested rows plus 5 finished sources), 11 are partly done, 56 are not started and 9 are not applicable or need checking; the 51-item brainstorm table adds 3 done, 1 pilot, 1 partly done and 41 not started (many overlap the rows above). Rows are not equal in size, so this is not a percentage of the work. Overall rough figure (estimate): about 15–20% of the accessible record by volume. Basis: the directory, yearbook and Indigenous-news work that is finished is large (about 89,000 person entries parsed from the directories and yearbooks), but the biggest unstarted sources (censuses, vital records, cemeteries, newspapers) are each of the same order or larger. Main figures: Anishinabek News 4,064 of 6,026 articles extracted (67%); Henderson's 6 of about 38 known editions (about 15%, estimate); Lakehead yearbooks second pass 20 of 20 volumes; living-gate sweep 2,858 of 3,082 planned removals (92%); funeral-home capture ongoing (811 captured); censuses 0. The ongoing funeral-home capture is simply marked ongoing. See the new pre-1900 priority section.

Purpose

ThunderBay.wiki is building a cross-referenced record of everyone who has lived in the Thunder Bay region (see How ThunderBay.Wiki Works). Each new source adds either new people (new pages) or new facts about people already here (enrichment). Over time the share of new records that simply land on an existing person should rise. That is the sign that the record is closing up.

This page is the work queue. It lists:

  • what has already been ingested (so nobody repeats it);
  • sources still to ingest, grouped by type, with where to get them, what period they cover, and what is known to be in them;
  • ideas from Michael's own "data to ingest" notes, broken out into individual entries and cross-referenced to the researched sources.

Rules that apply to every source

  • Living persons. Any source that can name a living person (recent directories, voters' lists, current faculty and staff, graduates of the last ~100 years, recent obituaries, social media) must go through the Category:Living persons gate before anything is public, and living people who are in Thunder Bay are also tagged Category:Thunder Bay people. See the ThunderBay.wiki Privacy Policy. This is a PIPEDA matter. In the tables below the Privacy column says "GATE" where this applies.
  • Copyright. Facts are extracted and written in our own words. Text of copyrighted obituaries, books and newspaper articles is not copied.
  • Entity resolution. Merge a new record into an existing person only when the match is near-certain. Otherwise create a separate page and list the pair as an uncertain duplicate.
  • Cite the source. Every ingested fact carries a citation to the specific volume, page or record.

Notes carried over from the old section headings

Already ingested (old section intro)

For page counts, listing counts and ingestion status of each Henderson's volume, see Henderson's Directories.

Sources still to ingest: column key (old section intro)

Column key: Privacy = GATE means the source can name living people and needs the Living persons gate; "Public" means the people named are almost certainly deceased. Status values: ☐ Not started · ◐ In progress / partial · ✔ Done · ? Needs access.

How a source is marked done (old section)

When a source has been fully ingested, change its Status cell to ✔ with the date and a link to the category or batch of pages it created, and add it to the "Already ingested" table. For each source, record: the page count created, the number of listings that matched an existing person, and any uncertain pairs. Superseded: the main page is now one status table. To mark a source done, change that source's row in place (Status, Progress, Last updated) and put the details under its heading on this page.

More Henderson's directories (Brodie library)

Original row ("City directories, voters' lists and telephone books" table)
  • Source: More Henderson's directories at the Brodie library
  • What it contains: City directories for Fort William / Port Arthur / Thunder Bay. The library says its Henderson Directories span 1884–2004 and are for in-branch use only[2]. • Status: ◐ 1884–1914 photo books done, cleanup done 29 Oct 2026; ads pass starting; 1920 and 1950 done; ☐ the rest. Needs someone to photograph pages (see Michael's note on paying someone to do this)
Progress (2 Nov 2026): 6 volumes ingested (1884, 1907 Fort William, 1907 Port Arthur, 1913, 1920, 1950). Progress (2 Nov 2026): deaths: 903 pages so far; births 0; marriages 0. The marriage index has about 1.38 million records (see the row), the deaths index is province-wide, so the share for Thunder Bay is not known.

Schools: yearbooks, convocation programs and school records

Yearbooks pair a name with a photograph, a year, a school, clubs, a nickname and often a home neighbourhood, and they link a young person to a family household. They are also the largest source of living people on this page. Graduates of the last roughly 100 years are mostly alive, so yearbook ingestion is GATE for everything after the 1920s.

First example: orc-2016-award-recipient-bios.pdf, a 19-page PDF of the 2016 Good Citizen, Spirit of Thunder Bay and Youth award-recipient bios (the file itself does not spell out ORC; the City's Official Recognition Awards page names the series and the City's meeting portal lists an Official Recognition Committee, so ORC is most likely that committee's initials).[56] Archive: the PDF is registered at Datum Locker as datum.locker/r/f1ad640e…2a1.

Tavily spend about $22 beyond the plan. (2) 30 Oct 2026 relink pass: 840 relatives linked to existing pages across 341 obituary pages, 816 redundant stubs redirected, 796 back-links added on the existing pages; 1,131 uncertain matches left unlinked. (3) 31 Oct 2026 cleanup (done): 74 placeholder stubs identified (e.g. "Unknown Webster", "Three sisters", "Wife Walker", "Parents (relative of John Mauracher)"); all unlinked on the 45 pages that referred to them, leaving the plain wording, 74 placeholder stubs tagged {{Pending deletion}} (Category:Pages pending deletion) for a sweeper; doubled-period typos fixed on 1,103 stub and obituary pages; final check found 0 undefined refs and 0 links to the placeholders in page text.

  • Overlaps with: Obituary pilot
  • Status: WikiBot 3: done (31 Oct 2026). Pass 1 (website In Memoriam page): All 27 entries on the single In Memoriam page were ingested: 18 existing person pages enriched, 9 person pages created, 5 duplicate pages merged with redirects (Bill Eames, Linda Phillips, George Kondor, Bruce Minore, John Naysmith), 26 redirects for name variants, 246 relative stubs created, about 50 existing relative pages linked and tied back, plus the RALU organisation page, 11 other organisation stubs and 2 categories. Each entry and the whole page were archived to datum.locker as client-side file claims (no Tavily; Gemini not used; cost $0). Uncertain: David Lewis kept separate from the older David Lewis page because the death years conflict; a 1980 notice for Mathew Stefureak is under Possibly related records; Jane Eames (fl. 1990) is a probable duplicate of Jane Audrey Eames, not merged. The page gives Anita Beltran Chen's death as 2010, which looks like a typo for 2020. Pass 2 (all 25 archived RALU News issues, 2009–2018, each archived on datum.locker; manifest in the newsletters folder): 2 merges of newsletter-only records (Marcia Dilley, Shawn Perring) and 1 further merge (Henry Åkervall), 8 existing pages rewritten or enriched, 16 website-list pages given additive newsletter sections, 1 new academic stub (William Sears), 2 people stubs (David Kemp, Ian F. Dew), 2 organisation stubs (CURAC, TBIFAA), 'Retirees' Association of Lakehead University' expanded into the main organisation page (history, newsletter table with 25 datum.locker links, website, members memorialized) with 9 redirects for RALU name variants, 1 new category. Only about a dozen formal newsletter memorial notices exist (Morrison 2010, Chapin 2010, Dilley 2011, Bjorklund 2012, Wigmore 2012, Smith 2012, Perring 2015, Carmean 2018, plus the Oct 2017 editorial list); the rest of the work is enrichment. Uncertain: Cathy Chapin identity probable; Dusty/Tom Miller and Helen Elizabeth Smith only cross-linked as possible; Ken Morrison (fl. 1945) only possible. Cost $0, no Tavily, no Gemini.
    Progress (2 Nov 2026): 25 items: done (100%).

Funeral-home obituary archives (crawl)

Original row ("Newspapers, forums and other community sources" table)
  • Source: Thunder Bay funeral-home obituary archives (Everest Funeral Chapel, Sargent & Son, Blake Funeral Home; the FrontRunner "Book of Memories" sites)
  • What it contains: Obituaries with photos and condolences. Sargent & Son's and Blake's 2025–26 obituaries are on Tribute Archive, which is not crawled (see the Tribute Archive row)
  • Where to get it: Everest; Sargent & Son; Blake
  • Period: to December 2024 (Sargent & Son, Blake); to present (Everest)
  • Privacy: Recent GATE
  • Status: ◐ Reserved / ongoing by WikiBot 4 (31 Oct 2026). Scope: archival crawl only, saving the full HTML, images, obituary text and condolences to Dropbox. No wiki pages are created from it; ingesting into person articles would be a separate task for the live obituary bot (WikiBot 3) if Michael wants it. Progress as of 30 Oct 21:05 Asia/Bangkok: Everest 940 obituaries, Sargent & Son 567, Blake 693; listings still being crawled.
Progress (2 Nov 2026): ongoing. 811 obituaries captured so far (Sargent & Son 257, Everest 312, Blake 242); about 6,235 still pending in the crawler (total listed: about 7,046, so about 12%).

Funeral-home obituaries, wiki ingestion

Original row ("Newspapers, forums and other community sources" table)
  • Source: Thunder Bay funeral-home obituaries, wiki ingestion (Sargent & Son, Everest, Blake), from the WikiBot 4 capture
  • What it contains: Extracted records (name, dates, relatives) from WikiBot 4's Datum Locker captures of the funeral-home obituary pages; each wiki page cites the datum.locker permalink
  • Where to get it: Dropbox /datumlocker/extracted_obituaries.json (grows while capture runs)
  • Period: to December 2024 (Sargent & Son, Blake); to present (Everest)
  • Privacy: Recent GATE
  • Status: WikiBot 3: reserved / ongoing (31 Oct 2026). Scope: funeral-home obituaries (Sargent, Everest, Blake) from WikiBot 4 capture, turned into person pages. Separate from WikiBot 4's archival-crawl row above.
Progress (2 Nov 2026): ongoing. 474 funeral-home obituary pages are on the wiki (Category:Funeral-home obituaries); the capture total is still growing, so 474 of 806 captured so far (59%).

Tribute Archive

Original row ("Newspapers, forums and other community sources" table)
  • Source: Tribute Archive
  • What it contains: Online obituaries with condolences and photos. Sargent & Son's and Blake Funeral Chapel's own sites list obituaries only up to December 2024; their 2025–26 obituaries appear to be hosted on Tribute Archive
  • Where to get it: Tribute Archive
  • Period: 2025–present
  • Privacy: Recent GATE
  • Status: ✘ Not being ingested (WikiBot 4, 2026-10-30). Its Terms of Use (section 3) forbid accessing or copying content "using any robot, spider, scraper, crawler or other automated means", and storing obituaries, without express written permission, and the site serves a Cloudflare bot challenge. It was left out of the funeral-home obituary archive for that reason. Ingesting it would need written permission from Tribute Archive or a manual route.
Progress (2 Nov 2026): not applicable (not being ingested).

From Michael's brainstorm

This section breaks out the items in Michael's own notes file data to ingest.txt (kept in his Dropbox, "Curriepedia" folder, last saved 19 August 2026). The notes are Michael's ideas. Where an idea matches a researched source above, the Link column points to the same source. Entries are numbered so they can be ticked off.

Progress on these 51 items (2 Nov 2026): 3 done (items 25, 26 and 30), 1 pilot (item 40), 1 partly done (item 36), 41 not started (including the six logged Papers volumes, items 46–51), 5 unknown, example or reference only.

The 51 brainstorm items are now merged into the source sections above; each item appears under its source heading as an original row of the brainstorm table.

Map and display ideas (not sources)

  • Map layers. A map that can be filtered to churches, cemeteries, hospitals, rivers and historical rail routes. Michael's reasoning: for the "SimCity" view, rail and water routes are almost the only ways goods and people entered Thunder Bay. Cemeteries should carry GPS coordinates.
  • Road dates. When each road was created or named (item 34).

Entity-resolution and tooling notes in the file

These are design notes rather than sources. They are recorded here so they are not lost.

  • Not-the-same flag. Add a way to record that two sources are not the same person, or Michael's manual decision. Example from the notes: Alexander Matheson is not married to Theresa Matheson, and one of them never lived in Thunder Bay.
  • Rules-based checks. Use rules for hard conflicts (impossible marriages, dates, places) and a name-rarity score, because very unusual surnames help most. Count how many articles were assigned to more than one person, and how many same-name people have conflicting birthdays.
  • No-name babies. Decide who to group unnamed infants with.
  • Count check recorded in the notes. 335,282 persons from 465,617 linked person-events, 1.39 articles per person on average, 259,324 (77%) with a single article, about 7,937 display names (2.4%) split across more than one person.
  • Core feature. A pipeline that takes arbitrary documents, stores them in a sources and sources_data table, and lets a reader click a citation to open a graph or table of all sources for entity resolution. Test it with an image, a document and a web page. The datum.locker citation link is part of this.
  • Crawler. The existing crawler (queue modes create, enrich, both) is flawed. It needs better instrumentation and word-frequency scoring for names.
  • FamilySearch tie-in. Compare resolved entities with FamilySearch to see how many link up.
  • Skipped items. The file also holds unrelated personal notes (a command to clean a scratch folder and a block about dance forums). They are not Thunder Bay sources and were left out.
