Pierre Deschamps, also known as Pierriche or Peter, was a mixed-ancestry trader who served as chief of the Red Rock Band.[1]
Life
- Son of the Frenchman Jean Baptiste Deschamps and a Saskatchewan Cree woman.
- Lived at Fort William, Pic and Nipigon House (for twenty years) before moving with his family to Red Rock in 1870.
- Listed on the 1871 census as a "French & Indian" "Indian Trader".
- Elected chief of the Red Rock Band for a three-year term in 1885, and again in 1899.
- After his 1885 election he moved his house from the mission at Lake Helen to 100 acres of government land he had bought along the Nipigon River.
Family
- Married Louise de Laronde, also of mixed ancestry.
- Their children included Michel Deschamps, Denis Deschamps, Alexander Deschamps, Charles Deschamps and Henry Deschamps.
