Esther Eleonora Mackereth (née Astrid Eleonora Hansen; 1917 – before 2007) was born in Rjukan, Norway, the only daughter of Harald and Sigrid Hansen. She came to Canada with the family in 1928 and went by the anglicized name Esther. She was the sister of the ski jumpers Knute and Tor Hansen, who founded the Little Norway hill that became Big Thunder.
Family
- Married W. Albert Mackereth on 3 October 1938.[1]
- Sister of Arne Hansen (1911–1983), Knute Hansen (1915–1988), Erling Hansen and Tor Hansen (1921–2016).[2]
- The Times-Journal announced sons born to W. Albert and Esther (née Hansen) Mackereth in April 1941, and further sons to W. Albert Mackereth in April 1944, May 1946 and October 1947.[3] The index of Fort William deaths lists Donald S. Mackereth, infant son of Albert, who died in Winnipeg on 18 March 1945.[4]
- Two of her sons' obituaries trace the family's later life. David Taylor Mackereth (1946–2010) was born in Fort William (now Thunder Bay) and "moved with his family to Winnipeg as a small child"; in 1997 he retired to Kaslo, British Columbia, "to spend time with his parents". His obituary says he "was predeceased and is now reunited with his parents, Albert and Ester; and brothers, Bill and Donald."[5] Ted Mackereth (Edward Hansen Mackereth, 1947–2018) was also born in Fort William and later moved to Winnipeg.[6]
- Margaret Hansen's obituary of November 2007 lists "sister Esther Mackereth" among Knute's siblings who had already died.[2] Her date of death has not been found.

She was born Astrid Eleonora Hansen, the only daughter of Harald and Sigrid, and was baptised at Rjukan, Telemark, on 25 August 1917. She emigrated with the family in 1928, and the emigration record gives her birth date as 4 August 1917.[7][8] In Canada she went by the anglicized name Esther, with Eleonora as her middle name.
