Erling Hansen

Erling Hansen was a ski jumper with the Fort William Ski Club in 1939. He was a son of Harald Hansen and Sigrid Hansen, who brought the family from Oslo to Fort William in about 1927–28, and a brother of Arne, Knute, Tor and Esther Mackereth. His dates of birth and death have not been found; Margaret Hansen's 2007 obituary lists him among Knute's siblings who had already died.[1]
Role in skiing
He was entered in the jumping at the 1939 Dominion ski championships on Mount McKay.[1] His brothers Knute and Tor later founded Little Norway, the hill that became Big Thunder.
Family sources
Margaret Hansen's obituary names "Knute's brothers Arne and Erling and sister Esther Mackereth" as predeceased.[2] A 1933 photograph shows Erling and Knute jumping side by side at the Fort William Ski Club.[3] No Erling Hansen appears in the Thunder Bay Public Library's death and obituary indexes for 1900–2025, so he may have died outside the Lakehead.
Norwegian records
Erling was baptised at Sagene church in Kristiania (Oslo) on 30 June 1913, the son of Harald Hansen and Sigrid Mørk.[4] The 1928 emigration record gives his birth date as 18 April 1913; he sailed with his mother and siblings to Canada on the Stavangerfjord in August 1928.[5] Margaret Hansen's 2007 obituary lists him among those who had already died.[2] See Harald Hansen: Family and descendants.
