William Muir Graham (30 June 1929 – 3 August 2017 (aged 88)) was a Canadian entomologist who taught biology at Lakehead University. He was known as Bill.[1]
Life and career
Graham was born on 30 June 1929 in Wainwright, Alberta, the youngest of four children of Paul and Mildred (née Maxwell) Graham; his three sisters died before him. He studied biology at the University of Alberta, the University of British Columbia and the University of London and received his PhD in 1964 from St Andrews University in Dundee, Scotland. He specialised in entomology; early in his career he was a research scientist in Kenya studying the behaviour and control of stored-product pests such as beetles and moths, and later he taught biology at Lakehead. He loved to teach, aiming to encourage questioning and independent thought, and was also a poet and essayist. For his memorial he chose Robert Burns's epitaph on his father's friend William Muir of Tarbolton Mill.[1]
Death and family
He and his wife Margaret (née Barclay) married in Calgary in May 1955 and lived in Canada, Kenya, England and Scotland, then travelled widely in retirement. Graham died on 3 August 2017 in Kelowna, aged 88. He was survived by Margaret, his children Janice, Douglas (with France) and Karen (with Rick), and five grandchildren, Carl, Roslyn, Ruskin, Camille (with José) and Stéphanie.[1]
