John Alexander Kennedy Naysmith (died (2017-09-11)11 September 2017) was a forestry educator who directed the School of Forestry at Lakehead University and was its founding dean of forestry from 1988 to 1995.[1]

Career and honours

Naysmith gave several decades of service to Lakehead University, including as director of the School of Forestry and as founding dean of the forestry department between 1988 and 1995. He taught for about ten more years after retiring and contributed widely to the forest industry; in 2011 the university named him a Fellow of the University. On 30 September 2016 Lakehead announced the creation of the Naysmith Scholar award, given each year to a third-year student in the Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry or Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management who shows leadership, willingness to listen and the ability to inspire others.[1]

The notice on the retirees' site is a message from David Tamblyn, chair of the Board of Governors, offering condolences to John's wife Toie and the Naysmith family. It gives no date of death; the Chronicle-Journal's obituary index lists the death of John Alexander Kennedy Naysmith on 11 September 2017.[1]

Other records

An obituary-index entry dated 15 September 2017 lists this person.[2]

Newspaper record

  • Biographical notice in The Chronicle-Journal, 1988-01-15.[3]
    • Index note: Heads LU School of Forestry.
  • Retirement notice in The Chronicle-Journal, 1994-07-04.[4]
    • Recorded with the title "Dr."
    • Index note: Lakehead University.

Notes

The pages 'John Naysmith (fl. 1988)' and 'John Alexander Kennedy Naysmith' were merged because of the rare surname and the shared forestry post at Lakehead University; the retirees' notice itself carries no date of death, so the date comes from the newspaper index.

Remembered in RALU News (October 2017)

The editorial of the October 2017 issue lists John Naysmith among the academics of the university community who had died in the past year, together with Graham Borradaille, Bill Graham, Tom Hazenberg, John Naysmith and William Sears, and says the association exists to keep their dreams and aspirations alive.[5]
