This article is about the Port Arthur locomotive engineer. For his father, see Pierre L'Heureux (1825).

Peter L'Heureux, also known as Pierre L'Heureux ((1855-08-19)19 August 1855 – 19 May 1953(1953-05-19) (aged 97)), was a locomotive engineer who settled in Port Arthur and was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for sixty years.

Early life

L'Heureux was born on 19 August 1855 at Saint Ambroise de la Jeune Lorette, Quebec, a son of Pierre L'Heureux and Rosalie Lirette.[1] He had been a resident of Port Arthur since 1906.[2]

Career

Peter L'Heureux, Port Arthur News-Chronicle, 17 August 1950

A locomotive engineer by trade, L'Heureux joined the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and reached sixty years' membership in February 1950.[2] On the afternoon of 17 August 1950, two days before his ninety-fifth birthday, Don Macdonald, the brotherhood's general chairman for the western region, travelled from Winnipeg to present him with a sixty-year jewel at his home — an honour then held by only one other member in western Canada and three or four in the east. The presentation was arranged a few days early so that his daughter, Mrs. J. C. W. Parsons, could attend before leaving on a holiday in eastern Canada.[2]

Personal life

L'Heureux married Mary Ellen O'Hara and lived at 68 Machar Avenue in Port Arthur.[3] According to family recollection his house stood at the corner of Bay Street and Machar Avenue; his sons were prominent local hockey players during the 1920s; and his daughter Eva worked as a cleaner at the Colonial Theatre on Arthur Street.[4] His son Frank married Bertha Kish and became superintendent of the grain elevator at Churchill, Manitoba.[4]

At the ninety-fifth-birthday celebration in 1950, four generations of the family were photographed together at his home: L'Heureux; his daughter, Mrs. J. C. W. Parsons; his granddaughter, Mrs. B. Arges; and his great-grandsons, Gordon and David Arges.[3]

Death

L'Heureux died at Port Arthur on 19 May 1953.[1]
