Kenneth Lloyd Morrison, known as Ken (died 29 July 2010, aged 86), was a social and political activist in Thunder Bay who also helped build the extension services of Lakehead University in its early days, and a member of the Retirees' Association of Lakehead University.[1]
Life and work
The retirees' notice calls Morrison best known for his social and political activism. It also credits him with helping to build Lakehead University's extension services in the 1960s and 1970s, a time when staff reached communities all over Northwestern Ontario, a region it compares in size to France, and sometimes flew there in a small Cessna. He was a mentor to many people, and the writer of the notice (editor Ian Dew) says he touched everyone in the association.[1]
Death and memorial
Morrison died peacefully on 29 July 2010 at the age of 86, which puts his birth between 30 July 1923 and 29 July 1924. A memorial service on 10 August 2010 in the Provincial Room of the Prince Arthur Hotel drew about three hundred friends and admirers from the several communities he belonged to. They heard poetry and music and sang some of his favourites, among them "Solidarity Forever". The family asked that donations go to the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, the Northern Cancer Fund or the Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship, which runs a Ken Morrison Lecture Series.[1] An obituary-index entry dated 7 August 2010 gives the same date of death (29 July 2010).[2]
Membership
The "Who are we?" list of members in the June 2009 issue of RALU News names "Morrison, Ken" and, separately, "Morrison, Jean". The list does not say how they were related.[3]
- The page Ken Morrison (fl. 1945) collects name-only notices for a Ken Morrison in the Thunder Bay District from 1945 to 1993, including a 70th-birthday notice dated 7 September 1993 (the birthday itself recorded as 3 September 1993), a 1970 school-board trustee candidacy and a 1990 Good Neighbor award. A 70th birthday in 1993 means a birth on 3 September 1923, which fits the age of 86 at death on 29 July 2010. He is possibly the same person, but only the age agrees, so the pages are not merged.
- Kenneth P. Morrison, an agent at the Motor License Branch who lived in Fort William in 1950, has a different middle initial and is not treated as the same person.
