Kate McKellar (later known as Mrs. F. C. Perry) was a schoolteacher and community leader at Fort William.[1]
Early life
- Daughter of Captain Duncan McKellar.
- Came to Fort William from the south shore in 1863, along with some members of the McKellar family; the rest of the family joined them some time later.[1]
Career
- Taught school at Fort William for some years, succeeding Miss D. Fregeau in the role.[2]
- Took an active part in her church and Sunday School.[1]
- Served as president of the West Algoma Local Council of Women.[1]
Family
- Later married F. C. Perry, thereafter known as Mrs. F. C. Perry.[1]
In the Papers of the Thunder Bay Historical Society
Kate McKellar, later known as Mrs. P. C. Perry, served as school teacher at the original East Fort William school beginning in 1878, receiving an annual salary of $162.82.[3] The trustees raised her salary to $350.00 in 1879, and she received a government grant of $25.00 that year, as recorded in the McKellar account book.[3]
