He was an active volunteer with the Westfort Kiwanis Club, the United Way, and Your Teeth for a Lifetime. He also taught as an adjunct lecturer at Confederation College and spoke to the Thunder Bay Dental Association. His personal interests included sports cars, historical reading, wood carving, and various outdoor activities like skiing and fishing.[1]

He was predeceased by his parents William Sr. and Marion, his stepmother Libby, his brother Reg and his wife Donna, and his sister Patricia and her husband Peter. He was survived by his wife Beverly, his son John, and his nieces and nephew Leanne, Laura, Tracy, Michelle, and Stephen.[1]
