Willard H. Carmean (died (2017-12-30)30 December 2017), known as Will, was an academic in sustainable forestry at Lakehead University and a member of the Retirees' Association of Lakehead University.[1]

Remembered in RALU News

The February 2018 editorial says that "already 2018" had seen the association lose its friend and stalwart academic in sustainable forestry, Willard Carmean. It recalls his eager face on campus at all hours long after his retirement and his habit of wearing red braces (suspenders), so that the writer will never see a pair without thinking of him.[1]

The May 2018 issue announced a "Walk with Will", a commemorative event on Saturday, 29 September 2018 at the Greenwood Lake Conservation Reserve, a place that was very special to him and an old-growth forest he tried to protect during his lifetime. The walk was to start at 1 p.m. at the information board at the trailhead for the blue and yellow trails, and walkers were encouraged to wear (red) suspenders.[2] The issue's membership-drive article also said the association would celebrate Carmean's life and achievements with the walk.[2]

Membership

The "Who are we?" list in the June 2009 issue of RALU News names "Carmean, Willard" among the members.[3]

Death

The obituary index lists Willard H. Carmean with a death on 30 December 2017, in an entry dated 6 January 2018.[4] The newsletter, dated February 2018, speaks of his leaving as an event of the new year, which is slightly different from the index date; the index date is kept here. The surname is uncommon, and he appears as a retiree member in 2009 and as a forestry academic in 2018, so the newsletter and the index are treated as the same person.
