Stanley George Andrew Magwood ((1934-02-12)12 February 1934 – 6 May 2020(2020-05-06) (aged 86)) was a Canadian physiologist who taught biology at Lakehead University from 1965 to 1982 and later worked as a toxicologist for the federal health department. He was known as Stan.[1]

Early life and career

Magwood was born on 12 February 1934 in Scott, Saskatchewan, the youngest of eight children of Hilliard and Ethel Magwood; all of his five sisters and two brothers died before him. The family moved to Ottawa in the 1950s, where he studied at the University of Ottawa, met his future wife Kathleen and earned a PhD in physiology in 1963. He did postdoctoral research with the National Research Council Canada in Ottawa in 1963–65.[1]

Offered a professorship at Lakehead University in 1965, he taught there until 1982, chairing the biology department for three years from 1975. In 1974–75 he took a sabbatical in Sydney, researching frog thyroid function at the CSIRO. During a three-year leave he contracted with the World Health Organization to prepare pesticide data sheets and formally retired from Lakehead in 1983. He then joined the federal Department of Health and Welfare as a toxicologist, working on pesticides and later on drugs, particularly AIDS treatments, until retiring in 1998, and attended conferences including one in Moscow.[1]

Community and interests

In Thunder Bay he was active in local scouting, holding leadership roles at district and troop level, and in camping and canoeing, including the annual Voyageur's Rendezvous that he helped organise. He loved carpentry and gardening. Before and after retirement he volunteered with the British Isles and Ontario genealogical societies, winning several awards, and shared his interest in family history with his grandchildren Anna and Patrick.[1]

Death and family

Magwood died of COVID-19 on 6 May 2020, aged 86, in a long-term care home in Ottawa; a remembrance service was planned for Cole Funeral Services once gatherings were again possible. He was survived by his wife of 60 years, Kathleen; his children James (with Kristina), Jennifer (with Kevin) and Michael; grandchildren Anna, Zola, Patrick and Andrew; and great-grandchildren Lilyan and Samantha.[1]
