Roy Piovesana

Roy Piovesana (born 1942 in Fort William (Thunder Bay), Ontario; died Jan. 20, 2020), was a Canadian teacher and historian. He is one of three children born to Enrico Piovesana (1900–1987) and Christina Brescia (1913–1990). His father emigrated from Pasiano Pordenone (near Udine) in 1924 and his mother was a second generation Italian Canadian born in Fort William.

Roy Piovesana was born in 1942 in Fort William (now Thunder Bay) and died January 20, 2020. He was one of three children born to Enrico Piovesana and Christina Brescia, the latter a second-generation Italian Canadian born in Fort William; his father emigrated from Italy in 1924. Piovesana grew up in Fort William's East End, attending St. Peter's Roman Catholic School and graduating from Fort William Collegiate Institute in 1961, and he earned an Honours B.A. (1965) and M.A. (1970) in History from Lakehead University. He began teaching in 1965 at Westgate Collegiate Institute, moved to Hammarskjold High School as a teacher and head of history in 1984, served as a sessional lecturer at Lakehead University in 1992–1993, and retired in 1998. In 2000 he was appointed archivist/historian for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Thunder Bay by Bishop Frederick J. Colli, and he served as president of the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society and the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, co-authored a history of St. Dominic Parish with his wife Diane Piovesana, and received a Citizen of Exceptional Achievement Award from the City of Thunder Bay in 1999.
