Philip "Phil" Gougeon (1947 – (2016-02-19)19 February 2016) was an Ottawa-born, Port Arthur-raised public servant who became an assistant deputy minister of advanced education in Alberta.[1][2]

Life and family

Gougeon was born in Ottawa in 1947 and raised in Port Arthur (later Thunder Bay), where he was known as Butch; at Lakeview High School he played football and ran track.[1] He completed an undergraduate degree at Lakehead University and a graduate degree at the University of Calgary, then married Deborah and in 1973 settled in Edmonton.[1]

He spent a 30-year career in the Alberta government, beginning in Alberta Treasury and moving to Advanced Education, where he directed the Advanced Education Endowment Fund for seven years and later served as assistant deputy minister.[1] He retired in 2008 to golf and snowshoe, and enjoyed gardening, wine making and winter trips to Maui.[1]

He died suddenly on 19 February 2016. He was survived by Deborah, his wife of 43 years, their daughters Amanda and Andrea, his brother Robert and his mother Ida; his father Philip Gougeon had died earlier.[1]

Possibly related records

The 1950 Henderson's directory lists a Philip Gougeon, employee of Provincial Paper, at 428 Adams, Port Arthur. Philip Gougeon (1947–2016) was three years old in 1950 and his obituary says his father was also named Philip Gougeon, so this entry is probably the father, not the subject of this page. It is kept here, not dropped.
