John Swanston was a mixed-ancestry Hudson's Bay Company chief factor on Lake Superior who pressed for recognition of "Halfbreed" rights in the Robinson-Superior Treaty.[1]
Career
- Took charge of the Pic district in 1828.
- Was chief factor at Michipicoten by 1849 and was employed by the company in connection with the negotiation of the Robinson-Superior Treaty in September 1849.
- Distributed treaty compensation at Michipicoten in September 1850 and was praised by Commissioner William Robinson for his services.
Advocacy
- In an 1850 letter to Governor George Simpson he agitated for Crown recognition of the "rights and claims" of "Halfbreeds" to a share of the payments for the Lake Superior treaty land cession.
