Joseph David Stewart (7 September 1942 – 9 March 2021 (aged 78)) was an American-born archaeologist who taught anthropology at Lakehead University from 1975 until his retirement in 2003 and was known as Joe.[1]
Education and career
Stewart was born on 7 September 1942 and raised in Texas. He earned a BA in anthropology at Texas Technological College in 1965, then moved to Canada and completed a PhD in archaeology at the University of Calgary in 1974. A year later he joined Lakehead's new Department of Anthropology, where he stayed until 2003 and continued smaller research projects and travel as an emeritus professor.[1]
His archaeological work ranged over northern Mexico and the American Southwest, where he kept collaborating with University of Calgary colleagues, as well as Texas, Baja California, the central interior of British Columbia and the boreal forest of northern Ontario. He specialised in applying scientific methods to archaeological inference, with particular expertise in archaeometry and radiocarbon dating, and worked across disciplines with geographers, geologists, physicists and chemists. In the early 1990s he helped create Lakehead's BSc programs in Geoarchaeology and Anthropology, which remain unusual in Canadian universities.[1]
Death and family
Stewart died on 9 March 2021, aged 78, after a short illness. Colleagues remembered his rigour, dry humour and Texas drawl. Lakehead's Thunder Bay campus lowered its flag to half-mast in his honour on 22 March 2021. He was survived by his wife Debra of Thunder Bay, his brother Larry of Texas and his son Sean of California.[1]
Other records
An obituary-index entry dated 17 March 2021 lists this person.[2]
