James Peter "Jim" Lyzun ((1945-08-09)9 August 1945 – 28 January 2003(2003-01-28) (aged 57)) was a Thunder Bay teacher and aviation historian, and a Lakeheadologist, author of Aviation in Thunder Bay.[1]

Life

Lyzun grew up in Oshawa, Ontario, graduated as an aeronautical engineer from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in 1967, and worked for de Havilland Aircraft on projects including the Buffalo aircraft and the hydrofoil. He moved to Thunder Bay in 1970 to attend Lakehead University, and from 1973 taught elementary shop classes for the Lakehead Board of Education until retiring in December 2002.[2]

Aviation in Thunder Bay

He completed a manuscript on Thunder Bay's aviation history in the late 1990s but died before it was published; it was updated and organized by Dr. David Kemp of Lakehead University and published by the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society.[2][3] The book was co-winner of the Society's Gertrude H. Dyke Award (2009 awards).[4] Sources differ on the publication year: the fonds description gives 2006, the awards list 2007.[2][4] His research papers are held at the Thunder Bay Museum.[2]

Death

He died of cancer on 28 January 2003, aged 58.[2]
