Gregory James Johnson (16 March 1971 – 7 July 2019 (aged 48)) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player from Thunder Bay who played in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, and Nashville Predators.[1]
Career
Before his professional career, Johnson recorded 96 points in 47 games for the Thunder Bay Flyers of the USHL in 1988–89, winning the Clark Cup with the team in 1989. He played forward, shooting left, and was listed at 5'10" (178 cm) and 196 lb (89 kg); his final recorded season was 2006–07 with the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL.[2] His brother Ryan Johnson was also a professional hockey player.
Life
Greg Johnson was a professional ice hockey forward from Thunder Bay, Ontario, who died unexpectedly at the age of 48 in the Detroit area, where he had lived for many years. He played in the National Hockey League from 1993 until 2006, spending the majority of his career with the Detroit Red Wings and the Nashville Predators, for whom he served as captain for several seasons. Before his professional career, Johnson played junior hockey with the Thunder Bay Flyers of the USHL and collegiate hockey at the University of North Dakota. At the midget level, he was a member of the Thunder Bay team that won a bronze medal at the national midget tournament held in the Lakehead in 1988. He represented Canada internationally, winning a gold medal at the 1991 World Junior Championship and a silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics. In 2010, Johnson was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to hockey in Thunder Bay.[3]
