Dr. M. Elizabeth Arthur (died 17 February 1984) was a resident of Thunder Bay, Ontario.[1]
Founding member of the Department of History at Lakehead University and former department chair. Editor of Thunder Bay District, 1821–1892: A Collection of Documents (Champlain Society, 1973)[2], a monumental work on the documentary history of the region. She also served on the Council of the Champlain Society and guided the revival of the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society's Papers & Records in the 1970s. The Society's award for best full-length scholarly work is named in her honour.
She first taught at Port Arthur Collegiate Institute (PACI) before joining the university.[3] In the 1950s she taught history and theatre arts at Fort William Collegiate Institute (F.W.C.I.), where she staged The Mousetrap. A former student remembered her among the school's "remarkable teachers".[4]
She is listed among the Lakeheadologists.
Research on the de Laronde family
Ida Schneider gave her research files on the de la Ronde family to Arthur, who deposited them with the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society as the De La Ronde Family fonds. Arthur's article "The de Larondes of Lake Nipigon" (Papers and Records IX, 1981, pp. 31–48) describes them; see Louis Denis de Laronde.[5]
