Elinor Barr
Elinor Barr (2 April 1933 – 16 February 2025 (aged 91)) was a historian and author specializing in the history of northwestern Ontario.
Early life
Barr was born on 2 April 1933. She graduated from McKellar Hospital as a registered nurse in 1954, then returned to academia to earn an Honours degree in History from Lakehead University in 1974.
Career
Barr was a research associate of the Lakehead Social History Institute and a prolific writer on the history of northwestern Ontario. She founded Singing Shield Productions, a historical publishing venture whose archival collections became a significant resource for the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society.
Her published works include Thunder Bay to Gunflint, Silver Islet: Striking it Rich in Lake Superior, Swedes in Canada: Invisible Immigrants, and the co-produced television series Distant Voices.
Death
Barr died on 16 February 2025.
