The Reverend Charles Murdoch Kirby (20 May 1861 – 17 April 1921 (aged 59)), recorded in English parish sources as Murdoch Charles Kirby, was an Anglican clergyman who served in Fort William from 1887 to 1897.[1][2]
Early life
- Born 20 May 1861 in Mayfield, Sussex, England.[3]
- Christened 31 July 1861 at St Dunstan's Church, Mayfield.[3]
- Son of the Reverend Henry Thomas Murdoch Kirby and Hannah Jane Kirby.[3]
Ministry
- Ordained deacon in 1887 and priest in 1889.[1]
- Incumbent of Fort William Anglican parishes from 1887 to 1897.[1]
- Founded St Thomas's Church in Westfort in early 1890 and St Luke's Church in the east end of Fort William in late 1890.[1]
- Appointed Rural Dean of Thunder Bay in 1896, returning to England the following year.[2]
- Instituted as Vicar of Tidebrook, Sussex, in October 1900.[2]
Family
- Married Gertrude Frances Bligh (born about 1865) on 6 August 1889 at Hampton Hill, Middlesex, England — that is, in England during his Fort William incumbency rather than in Thunder Bay.[3]
- Five of the couple's eight children were born during his years in the district:[3]
- Eva Elizabeth Murdoch Kirby, born 24 April 1890.
- Hannah Jean Grey Kirby, born 4 March 1891 in the Thunder Bay District.
- Emma Frances Armytage Kirby, born 12 March 1892 in the Thunder Bay District.
- Bessie Gertrude Henrietta Kirby, born 10 November 1893 in Fort William; died in Canada in 1894.
- Isabel Caroline Bligh Kirby, born 24 November 1894 in Fort William.
- Three further children were born after the family's return to Sussex: Gertrude Eleanor Harriette Kirby (16 March 1898, Mayfield Vicarage), a stillborn child (29 March 1901, Mayfield) and Charles Henry Stuart Kirby (29 March 1901, Mayfield).[3]
