F. Brent Scollie

F. Brent Scollie (born April 1940)^[1] P6XD-158 is a historian and Lakeheadologist living in Ottawa as of 2026.

His father was Frederick Scollie (Nov. 28, 1902 - Feb. 21, 1990)

He is the author of Biographical Dictionary of Victorian Thunder Bay, 1850–1901 (Thunder Bay Museum). [1]

Early life

Born in Fort William, Ontario in April 1940.
Son of Frederick John Scollie (1902–1990) and Ida Amelia Kish.
Graduated from Fort William Collegiate Institute in 1958.
Graduated from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario with a B.A. Honours in English and French in 1962.
Graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Library Science with a B.L.S. in 1970, subsequently completing an M.L.S. at the same institution.

Taught at three Lakehead secondary schools following his library science degree.
Taught at Lakehead University School of Library Technology.
Joined the federal public service in August 1973.
Retired from the federal public service in March 1997.
Based in Ottawa since 1973.
Contributed seven biographies relating to Thunder Bay to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography.
Member of the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society since the 1970s; contributed numerous articles and compiled an index to the Society's Papers and Records.
Published Thunder Bay Mayors and Councillors, 1873–1945 through the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society in 2000.
Published Biographical Dictionary and History of Victorian Thunder Bay (1850–1901) through the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society in 2020.

Father Frederick John Scollie was a long-time school trustee with the Fort William Board of Education.
Uncle Harold Mortimer Scollie (1904–1999) was a science teacher and principal at Fort William Collegiate Institute from 1936 to 1970.
First cousin William Bryce Scollie served as a councillor of the City of Thunder Bay.

Great-great-grandfather Robert Scollie (1799–1888), a native of Westray, Orkney Islands, worked for the Hudson's Bay Company at Marten Falls on the Albany River.
Robert Scollie married Mary Corrigal, daughter of chief trader Jacob Corrigal.
The Scollie family settled in Otonabee Township, Peterborough County, in the late 1830s.
George Jacob Scollie (1837–1923), eldest son of the Otonabee branch, returned to the district of his birth and settled in Fort William in 1902.
Jane Scollie (1869–1948), daughter of George Jacob Scollie, also settled in Fort William.
Fred Scollie (1869–1940), nephew and son-in-law of George Jacob Scollie, founded Scollie's Dairy in Fort William; the dairy operated until 1976.^[2]
