Cathy Ann Chapin (died (2010-10-08)8 October 2010) was probably the cartographer and map librarian of Lakehead University whose death in a tragedy was mourned in the December 2010 issue of RALU News.[1]

Remembered in RALU News

The editorial of the December 2010 issue begins on a sombre note: a colleague named Cathy Chapin had been "taken from us in a tragedy", and the editors felt that the full sense of loss was only beginning to sink in. The university, it says, lost a talented cartographer and map librarian, and the writers lost a friend and mentor. She loved to talk about maps and, in the editorial's words, could teach more in half an hour than a great deal of reading would.[1]

Identity

The newsletter gives no date of death or middle name. An obituary-index entry dated 13 October 2010 lists a Cathy Ann Chapin of Thunder Bay with a death on 8 October 2010,[2] two months before the issue and consistent with a loss that was "only now dawning". The surname is uncommon, so the two are treated as probably the same person, but the match rests on the name and timing alone.
