Walter Giba (2 November 1933 – 3 September 2022 (aged 88)) was a Fort Garry-born Assistant Fire Chief at Great Lakes Forest Products and resort owner who lived in Thunder Bay and Whitefish Lake.[1][2]
Life and family
Walter Giba was born in Fort Garry, Manitoba, and moved to Fort William with his family when he was seven years old. He attended Selkirk High School. Early in his life, he worked selling ice cream to support his family. He later began a long career at Great Lakes Forest Products, where he worked in the wood room for eight years before joining the fire department. He eventually reached the rank of Assistant Fire Chief and retired after twenty-five years at the mill.[1]
He married Ruth, and together they built a retirement home at Whitefish Lake. They also operated a business called Last Resort. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener who enjoyed sharing his produce with others. He was known for his sense of humor and for building a sauna at his lake property.[1]
He was survived by his children Darlene and her husband Gary, Debra, Dan and his wife Barb, and David. He was also survived by his grandchildren Kelly Boyce and his partner Nancy, Bryson Giba, and Kirstin Banaga and her partner Rommel, as well as great-grandchildren Zachary Boyce, Taryn Boyce, and Asher Banaga. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth, his parents Stefania and John Giba, his brothers Louie Giba, Tony Giba, and Benny Giba, and his sisters Alice Giba and Gladys Gerolami.[1]
Walter Giba died unexpectedly on September 3, 2022. A private celebration of life was held by his family. Arrangements were handled by Simpler Times Cremation Centre.[1]
