Strathcona Heights
Appearance
Strathcona Heights is the hillside above the Strathcona golf course, off Hodder Avenue in Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay). It was the home hill of the Port Arthur Ski Club from 1929 until at least 1940.
Skiing
The Port Arthur Ski Club built a log trestle jump there in 1929. Its clubhouses of 1938 and 1940 stood above the fifth hole of the golf course; the 1938 building burned on 3 December 1939.[1][2][3] The Thunder Bay Museum holds 1939 photographs of a club meet at Strathcona Heights, including two of Knute Hansen, later a co-founder of Big Thunder, jumping.[4]
