Career and service
Mike Kostick began his coaching career in the late 1930s as an assistant coach within the East End Minor Hockey League. He spent more than ten years coaching at various levels of the East End hockey system. During the 1941-42 season, he guided the East End Juveniles to both the city and twin city championship titles.[1]
In junior hockey, he held coaching positions with the East End Juniors, the West End Bruins, and the Fort William Hurricanes. He also spent one season coaching an intermediate team in Schreiber. His other work in intermediate hockey included two seasons with the Pepsi Pete's and a stint managing the Fort William Forts, whom he led to a district championship. At the senior hockey level, he served as the manager of the Fort William Beavers. Under his leadership, the team won the 1970 Thunder Bay Senior Hockey League title, breaking a period of dominance by the Port Arthur Bearcats.[1]
Beyond hockey, he was active in summer sports as a coach for East End baseball and softball teams, where he secured multiple championships. His administrative contributions included serving as an executive member of the Thunder Bay Amateur Hockey Association, a member of the Fort William Gardens Board of Directors, and a participant in the East End Athletic Association.[1]
His service to the community was recognized with several awards, including the 1974 Senior Sportsman Award from the Royal Canadian Legion. In 1990, the City of Thunder Bay presented him with the Citizen of Exceptional Achievement Award, followed by a Meritorious Award from the Thunder Bay Amateur Hockey Association in 1991. He was also honored by the Fort William Minor Hockey Association.[1]
