Maila Blanchette ((1935-08-16)16 August 1935 – 5 October 2017(2017-10-05) (aged 82)) was a Port Arthur-born resident of Thunder Bay known for her involvement in her church and her interest in technology and genealogy.[1][2]

Life and family

Maila Blanchette was born on August 16, 1935, in Port Arthur, Ontario, to Errki (Eric) Waris and Lempi Waris. She was raised in the area and later married Eugene George Blanchette in 1956. The couple moved frequently during their marriage, but they regularly returned to the Thunder Bay area during the summer months to visit with their relatives.[1]

She was a woman of faith who was active in her church and the local community. She had a wide range of interests, including politics, religion, and Finnish hockey players. She was also an early adopter of technology, using her computer for genealogy and various digital platforms for reading and music. Her hobbies included cooking, baking, and solving puzzles.[1]

She was predeceased by her husband Eugene George Blanchette, her parents Errki (Eric) Waris and Lempi Waris, her sister Marjorie Sundell, and her brother-in-law Roy Sundell. She was survived by her daughter Terry Keenan, her sons Larry Blanchette and Mark Blanchette, and her daughter-in-law Marcia. Her surviving family also included her grandchildren Jenna Keenan, Erin Blanchette, and Tomas Blanchette, as well as her brother-in-law Roy and his partner Robbin. Other surviving relatives included her nephews Ron and Ken, their respective partners Judy and Reija, and several great-nieces and great-nephews, including Eric, Rachael, Brandon, and Theoren, and her grandson-in-law Mitch.[1]

Maila Blanchette died on October 5, 2017, at the Toronto General Hospital. Medical care was provided by the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at that facility. Following her wishes, a private graveside service was planned for her immediate family. Memorial donations were suggested for the Canadian Cancer Society.[1]
