Jennifer Mary Phillips (21 February 1944 – 22 May 2022 (aged 78)) was a Thunder Bay hospital chaplain, craftswoman and community volunteer, and a long-serving member of the executive of the Retirees' Association of Lakehead University (RALU). Born Jennifer Mary Spy, she was known as Jenny.[1]
Life and work
Jenny was born in Britain in 1944, just after the Second World War. She met her future husband, Brian, in a church youth group when she was 13 and he was 15, and they married in 1965; they were together for 56 years. The memorial written by Brian lists a remarkable range of interests: she was a potter, watercolour and stained-glass artist, quilter, actress, gardener, public speaker, singer, photographer, Rotarian, scuba diver and a keen traveller who was happy at the wheel of a large truck or a four-wheel-drive vehicle.[1]
In the 1990s she became the first chaplain at the cancer centre on the Port Arthur General Hospital campus in Thunder Bay, after training in 1991 in Austin, Texas, as a non-denominational chaplain who counselled people of any faith or none.[1]
She was a long-time member of the RALU executive committee and chaired its Program Committee.[1]
Illness and death
Her breast cancer, first diagnosed in 2014, spread to her bones; this was recognised in October 2021 after the symptoms had been taken for arthritis, and it later reached the fluid around her brain. She died at home on Sunday, 22 May 2022, with a view of the Sleeping Giant, her two dogs, her husband and her children with their spouses. She was cremated through Northwest Funeral Alternative. A celebration of life was held on 27 July 2022 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church under Pastor Matthew, with the family acting as hosts in an informal, relaxed service that was recorded and shared online.[1]
Family
She was survived by her husband Brian, her son Kevin and his wife Katy, and her daughter Jacqui and her husband Lyndon, who all lived in Alberta.[1]
Other records
An obituary-index entry dated 4 June 2022 lists this person.[2]
