James Dickson was a merchant and early businessman at Port Arthur.
Business activity
- Arrived at Thunder Bay during the summer of 1868 aboard the steamer Algoma, together with Joseph Flaherty.[1][2]
- Commenced the erection of the first general store at Port Arthur, operated under the management of Thomas Marks of Bruce Mines.[1][2]
- Built the first business dock at Port Arthur, situated just south of the end of the Red River Road (Arthur Street), acting on behalf of Thomas Marks.[1]
- The dock was chiefly used to supply wood to the steamer Algoma, which plied semi-monthly between Collingwood and Thunder Bay.[1]
- Listed as a commercial agency representative alongside Geo. T. Marks, J. T. Ruttan & Co., Robert Maitland, J. Flaherty, and T. D. Ledyard.[3]
Personal
- Was among the Christmas callers at the home of Donald Campbell McKinnon and his wife in the early years of the settlement at Port Arthur.[4]
- Mrs. Lobb, who later became Mrs. James Dickson, was also among those callers.[4]
