Ellen Kareno (14 August 1927 – 27 June 2021 (aged 93)) was a Finnish-born jeweler and business owner in Port Arthur who co-operated Bay Jewelers for three decades.[1][2]
Life and family
Ellen Kareno was born in Saarijarvi, Finland, to Matti and Anna Savela. She moved to Canada in 1953 with her first husband, Niilo. For thirty years, the couple owned and operated Bay Jewelers, a shop specializing in watch repairs and jewelry located in the Finnish district of Port Arthur. She had a particular appreciation for jewelry pieces featuring Finnish craftsmanship.[1]
She spent her summers at Surprise Lake, where she appreciated the outdoors and gardening. During the winter months, she traveled to warmer climates in Florida and later Arizona. She was a long-term congregant of Hilldale Lutheran Church and a member of the Ladies of Kaleva.[1]
She was survived by her husband Olavi Harja and various family members in Finland and the United States. She was predeceased by her parents, her first husband Niilo, her sister Sanni, and her brother Esko.[1]
She died in a local hospital on June 27, 2021. A funeral service was conducted by Pastor Jari Lahtinen at the Harbourview Funeral Centre on July 7, 2021. She was buried at Lappe Cemetery.[1]
