Edward Hammond (died 15 July 2022, aged 78) was a Darlington-born gas fitter and auto appraiser who managed Wild Goose Park and was active in the Thunder Bay theatre and curling communities.[1][2]
Life and family
Edward Hammond was born in Darlington, England, in 1943 and moved to Canada with his family in 1949. He grew up in Rexdale. In his youth, he spent a year traveling through Britain and Europe by motorcycle and hitchhiking. He later qualified as a gas fitter and earned a yellow belt in karate. He first moved to Thunder Bay in the 1960s to manage Wild Goose Park, where he also took up skydiving. After returning to Toronto for a period, he met Arlene at the Maple Leaf Ballroom, and they married in 1973. They settled permanently in Thunder Bay to work at the family business, Twin Cities Auto Accident Appraisals Ltd.[1]
In Thunder Bay, he was an active member of the Port Arthur Curling Club and golfed at the Thunder Bay Country Club and Fort William Country Club. He participated in local theatre, performing with the Cambrian Players in their production of Arsenic and Old Lace. He and Arlene traveled extensively, visiting Hawaii, Florida, and several other locations across North America.[1]
He was survived by his wife Arlene, his son Jason and daughter-in-law Christine, and his granddaughter Kayelyn. His surviving siblings included his brother Don and sister Geraldine. He was also survived by his brother-in-law Byron and his wife Janet, as well as nieces and nephews Ken, Kristin, and Dan, and a cousin named Maureen. He maintained long friendships with Dennis Tracey and his wife Lorraine, and Rick Harrison. He was predeceased by his parents, Ted and Lilian.[1]
Edward Hammond died on July 15, 2022, at the hospice unit of St. Joseph's Hospital. He had previously received care at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Following his wishes, cremation took place and no formal funeral service was held. Arrangements were handled through Northwest Funeral Alternative.[1]
