Candy Mountain (Thunder Bay)
Appearance
Candy Mountain was an alpine ski area west of Thunder Bay, Ontario, on Candy Mountain Drive in Oliver Paipoonge. It operated from January 1972 to 2002.[1][2]
Ernie Smith, formerly general manager of Loch Lomond, founded the hill; Bill Irwin took it over in 1976, and Ward Bond bought it with Loch Lomond in 1979.[1] Its 1.2 km Poma double chair was billed as Ontario's longest lift.[1] After a failed private-club plan, the hill shut down in October 2002 and its snowmaking equipment was moved to Loch Lomond.[2] The land was later sold and rezoned residential, and the A-frame ski shop is now a house.[1][3]
