Annie McGuire (20 January 1923 – 22 April 2017 (aged 94)) was a Sandpoint Reserve-born Elder and matriarch who was a respected member of the Indigenous community in Thunder Bay.[1][2]
Life and family
Annie McGuire was born at Sandpoint Reserve on January 20, 1923. She was the eldest child of Julia Schelling and Daniel Legarde. During her youth, she attended St. Joseph's residential school in Fort William. She became a highly respected Elder and matriarch, known for her compassion and her role as a Chim Dimoyweea. She was deeply involved in her community, advocating for Indigenous women's rights and participating in constitutional discussions alongside her husband during the 1980s. She was also a member of the Metis movement and various Catholic parishes.[1]
She was a skilled quilter and enjoyed traditional activities such as hunting, gathering food and medicines, and picking berries in the bush. Her interests included cooking, baking, jigging, and listening to fiddle music. She was a volunteer for the Grandmother's Council at the Ontario Native Women's Association. In 1974, she met Queen Elizabeth II, where she notably maintained her personal values by declining to participate in a toast.[1]
She was predeceased by her husband Patrick McGuire and her children George McGuire, Nathaniel McGuire, Pamela Bertin, and Julia McGuire. She is survived by her children Elsie Hagar, Agnes Harrison, Patrick McGuire Sr., Maureen Pelletier, Michael McGuire, Russell McGuire, Henry McGuire, Daniel McGuire, Kathleen Moses, Cecilia Airns, Sullivan McGuire, and Dr. Patricia McGuire. She also raised her granddaughter Cora-lee McGuire-Cyrette and her nephew Michael Toset. Her legacy includes sixteen children and over two hundred grandchildren spanning six generations.[1]
Annie McGuire died on April 22, 2017, at Bethammi Nursing Home at the age of 94. A funeral mass was held at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church on April 26, 2017, with interment following at St. Andrew's Cemetery. Services were handled by the WESTFORT CHAPEL.[1]
