Ann White (30 July 1843 – 4 November 1906 (aged 63)), known after her marriage as Ann True or Annie True,[1] was an Englishwoman from Wiltshire who moved with her husband Henry True to the Llynfi valley of south Wales. She was the mother of Rosetta Agnes True and Bessie Martha True, and through them the ancestor of the True descendants in Canada and Australia.
Early life
- Born on 30 July 1843 at Hindon, Wiltshire.[2]
- Daughter of George White, a coal carrier, and of Deborah White, formerly Norris.[2]
- Her mother registered the birth on 20 August 1843, signing the register with a mark rather than a signature.[2]
- Her mother, once widowed, later married a man named Hayter, according to a handwritten family caption on a photograph of Ann and her husband.[1]
Marriage and family

- Married Henry True at Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire, on 11 July 1861, with whom she had three sons and four daughters.[3]
- The couple first lived at Maun House, Woolland, where four of their children were born and where her husband worked as an under gardener.[3]
- The family moved from Wiltshire to Maesteg, Glamorgan, and were living at 8 South Parade by 1891.[4]
- Her daughter Rosetta Agnes True was born on South Parade on 22 July 1884.[4]
- At the 1901 census the household at 8 South Parade consisted of Ann, her husband, their daughter Rosetta, and two boarders, one of whom was John Cooke, who married Rosetta the following year.[4]
Death
- Died on 4 November 1906 at 13 Harvey Street, Maesteg, aged 63.[5]
- The recorded causes were acute bronchitis and syncope, certified by Henry Sinclair MB.[5]
- The death certificate describes her as the wife of Henry True, a florist — an occupation given as "market gardener" on his own certificate four years later.[5][6]
- Her son-in-law John Cooke was present at the death and registered it on 6 November 1906.[5]

- Buried in the churchyard at Llangynwyd, south of Maesteg, in grave no. 11a 458; the family's burial note dates the burial to December 1906 and gives her age as 63.[1]
- Her husband was buried in the same churchyard in 1910, in grave no. 11a 427. By 2013 both gravestones were covered over with grass.[1]
