Adele Franzini ((1922-09-15)15 September 1922 – 21 July 2020(2020-07-21) (aged 97)) was an Istrian-born Thunder Bay immigrant who took in boarders, cooked for church clergy and ran a confectionery store.[1][2]

Life and family

Adele was born on 15 September 1922 in Pola, Italy (now Pula, Croatia). She married Giovanni Creglia, and in 1951 she followed him to Canada with her sons Bruno and Sergio; a third son, Walter, was born in 1956.[1] She first earned a living by providing room and board to newly arrived Italian immigrants, then worked for several years in the kitchen of St. Joseph's Hospital and cooked for the priests of St. Andrew's Church. In the early 1970s she opened the Algoma Confectionery.[1]

She enjoyed opera, travelled to Italy 17 times and Brazil three times, and kept lifelong memories of Istria.[1] After Giovanni Creglia she married Nandino Franzini; both husbands died before her, as did her sons Walter and Bruno ("Beanie") Creglia.[1] She died at home in Burnaby, British Columbia, on 21 July 2020, aged 97, survived by her son Sergio ("Satch") Creglia, his wife Julie, Bruno's wife Veronica, her sister Rina, grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The funeral Mass was at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Thunder Bay, with burial at St. Andrew's Cemetery.[1]
