Richard Coulter
Richard Henry Coulter (21 October 1860 – 1960) was a farmer in Milverton, Perth County, Ontario, and the brother of Joseph Coulter.
Early life
He was born 21 October 1860 in Ontario, Canada West, the son of Samuel Coulter and Elizabeth Moss.[1]
Family
He married Mary Jane Long (1868–1961). They had seven children:
- Annie Ada Coulter (1888–1989)
- Edith Coulter (1889–)
- Mary Eliza Pearl Coulter (1891–)
- Bertha Loletta Coulter (1894–1991)
- Catharine Leah Coulter (1897–1978)
- Samuel Lee Coulter (1900–1961)
- Lloyd William Coulter (1904–1987)[1]
Known in the family as "Uncle Dick", he and his descendants farmed near Stratford, in Milverton (a Mennonite-area village north of Stratford), remaining on the family farm. He was living in Mornington, Perth County, Ontario in 1931.[1]
Family lore had held that Richard's sons "all apparently lived into their 100s, dying only at about 104, or even 108" — but this is not supported by the documented record. Of his two sons, Samuel Lee Coulter died in 1961 at 61, and Lloyd William Coulter died in 1987 at 83; only Richard himself reached 100.[1]
Some time in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, or 1990s, his niece Ruth Newman was passing through the area with her daughters, and stopped, as she remembered the tree in the yard, which had a swing on it.
Death
He died in 1960, at the age of 100, and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Milverton, Perth, Ontario, Canada.[1]
He died the same year as his brother Joseph.
