Lakehead Technical Institute

From thunderbay.wiki

Lakehead Technical Institute was a business in Port Arthur.[1]

History and yearbooks

According to its 1951 yearbook, the Institute was then in its third year of service, training technicians for the forestry and mining industries in two-year technical courses and offering first-year university instruction in Arts, Applied Science, Commerce and Forestry; local teachers could also take Arts classes toward teaching certificates.[2][3][4] A temporary building had been erected in 1948, to serve until enrolment justified larger permanent buildings, and had been enlarged once. The Advisory Board, chaired by A. V. Chapman, was arranging funds for permanent buildings on a site of about eighty acres between Port Arthur and Fort William.[3] The students' council president wrote that plans had been completed to convert the Institute into a recognized junior university to be called the Lakehead College of Arts and Sciences.[5]

The Forestry Advisory Council established a forestry cruising camp during the 1950–51 school year, on Frazer Creek about five miles north of Cameron Falls, on forest land of about eighteen square miles donated by the Brompton Paper Company.[6] The Institute's second convocation was held on 15 May 1950 in the Port Arthur Technical School Auditorium, with diplomas for the Technical Division graduates in Forestry and Mining and an address to the graduates by Dr. Sidney Smith, president of the University of Toronto.[7]

Yearbooks: Lakehead Technical Institute Year Book (1951, Volume II, the second published by the students). The Internet Archive has digitized Lakehead yearbooks in its Lakehead University collection; see Category:Lakehead yearbooks.
