Drew School was a school in Fort William.[1][2][3]
Location and history
Drew School stood at the corner of Syndicate Avenue and Finlayson Street in Fort William. The City of Thunder Bay's parks and recreation facilities list, revised to 1973, gives that corner as the school's location and records a 2.6-acre site used for outdoor skating and as a playing field.[3] Henderson's 1920 directory lists a Drew Street School at "Syndicate N and Finlayson", which is the same corner and probably the same school. According to the Biographical Dictionary of Architects in Canada, C. D. Howe, then a student, drew the plans for the central part of Drew Public School on Syndicate Avenue in 1910, and two wings were added in 1914.[4]
Site today
The Summit Church is at 515 Syndicate Avenue North, close to the corner of Syndicate Avenue and Finlayson Street.[5] A photograph of 523 Brodie Street North shows Drew School in the background, and Michael B. Currie identifies the church's site as that background. No source found says that the church occupies the former school building or what became of the school building, so that is unverified. The coordinates in the infobox are the approximate position of the Syndicate Avenue and Finlayson Street intersection from OpenStreetMap street positions, not a surveyed site for the school building.[5]
Reminiscences
- Kenny Kantola grew up in the neighbourhood and attended Drew School in the early 1950s.[6]
- Lori Cook attended Drew School until grade 7 in the late 1960s and early 1970s, then went to McKellar Park School.[7]
- The school appears in the background of an archival photograph of 523 Brodie Street North.[8]
