Charles Smith (born 2 August 1879) was a Canadian soldier who enlisted at Fort William and served in the First World War.[1]
Early life
Smith was born at Yorkshire, England on 2 August 1879.[1]
Service
Smith enlisted at Fort William in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (regimental number 438293).[1]
Attestation
On enlistment, his trade was given as laborer; his next of kin was recorded as his father, Rupert Joseph Smith, of Redholme near Bradford, Yorkshire, Eng.[1]
p 196 of Thunder Bay and the First World War, 1914-1919 states that Charlie Smith was married to Alice; Charlie was a carpenter by trade, served in the 96th LSR before enlisting with the 52nd Battalion in May 1915. He was for a time with the Canadian Forestry Corps before being demobilized in February 1919.
