In Anishinabek News
- May 2014: Bill C-33 was opposed by a majority of leaders across the country who compared the legislation to the 1876 Indian Act. The legislation was criticized for increasing ministerial authority over education while lacking specific funding guarantees for First Nations. The bill included provisions regarding student truancy and shifted legal liabilities onto First Nations governments and educators.[2]
- May 2014: The federal government reportedly dropped this bill in May 2014 after it was rejected by First Nations leadership. Patrick Madahbee argued the act focused on government oversight rather than genuine First Nations control of education.[1]
